Honoring Our Veterans

Veterans Day has its roots in what was called Armistice Day, the day when a peace agreement was signed with Germany, ending World War I.

Armistice Day was established with a proclamation by President Woodrow Wilson, which reads in part: "Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."

On June 1, 1954, Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day to honor all U.S. veterans. On Veterans Day this year, let us remember and honor those men and women who served in the military, and let us continue to pray for our men and women currently serving in the military.

Veteran's Day Luncheon ~ 2024

Veteran's Honored at the Veterans Day Pot Luck Lunch - 2023

The potluck was fantastic!  It was a gorgeous day on the 12th of November, 2023.

We started with a prayer for Veteran's Day, and an emotional 'Call to Worship' reminding us that God's greatest gift to us is love. We enjoyed classic hymns, the magnificent voice of Leslie Giammanco, soprano, and a delightful 'sermon'(skit) with Pastor Sammie and Lay Leader Bruce.

Then the event of the day: A delicious and abundant potluck lunch with every delectable delight you can think of. And what a crowd!

Veteran's Day Activities - 2021

There was much activity in 2021 and it was reported over three pages in the December, 2021 COTC newletter.  Lots of pictures!

Thank You Veterans! 2020

On November 11th, twelve veterans received a special Veteran’s Day lunch. It was important to the Education Committee, which has hosted the lunch at the church for the past several years, to have some type of Veteran’s Day lunch this year.

While Covid made it impossible to gather at the church, lunch was delivered to the following veterans: Jean Baracco, Roy Bruton, Ron Cadieux, Bob Cole, Beth Doty, Diane Hutchins, Maurice Hutchins, Terry Moulton, John Nelson, Gary Ridlon, David Smith, and Wayne Zorger.

On behalf of all of us at Church on the Cape, we give thanks to each and every veteran for their service to this country. It is because of our veterans that we live in this free and great nation. God bless each one of you.

Thanks also to Alisson’s Restaurant for the donation of their delicious chowder; to the drivers who delivered the lunch: Sue Cayford, Beryl Samia, and Jane Smith; and to the Education Committee for overseeing this event.

God willing, we will be hosting this lunch back in Bartlett Hall in 2021.
